Learning to Fly

-> Listen to Learning to Fly here! <-

When Pam and I were roommates, she had a CD of Tom Petty’s greatest hits. I grew up with his music (in Reseda, where it is a long day), and loved it, but I think I also took it for granted. Hearing the hits compiled together gave me a new appreciation for just how incredible his songwriting always was.

In September 2017, as Pam and I were driving home from seeing U2 in San Diego, we learned that Tom was playing the Hollywood Bowl that night. We were too exhausted to contemplate trying to find tickets, but swore that the next time he toured we would go. Unfortunately, that Bowl show was Tom’s last.

Upon hearing the news of his passing, I got out my new Omnichord and started playing this:

Susan, Pam, and I worked up a full band arrangement built around that Omnichord sound, and recorded it with our good friend Jeff Gross over a few sessions in 2018 and 2019. It was so much fun!

While there has been an, um, slight delay, we are so thrilled to say Learning to Fly is finally out, on what would have been Tom Petty’s 72nd birthday!

You can see a few more video clips from the studio over on our Instagram, but more importantly, please go check out the final track!

You can download it on iTunes or stream it anywhere you please. Here’s a handy page that will lead you to your service of choice. Thank you!
